The Emma Mashini Foundation

Emma Tiny Mashinini (1929 –2017) was a South African trade unionist and political leader. Born and raised in Johannesburg, she experienced the discrimination and violence of the Apartheid system. As a result, she dedicated her life to fighting against its various, overlapping forms of inequality and injustice.

Resources & Fundraising

The Foundation is run on an initial capital provided by SACCAWU and the Lancaster Group, each contributing equal amounts. As a section 21, not for profit company, the foundation will need to raise further resources from other donors and sponsors to implement its programmes and activities as envisaged by the Foundation.

The Formation of the Emma Mashinini Foundation.

Its goal is to honour her contributions to the political and social life of the country, which took place under great personal sacrifice, by creating an avenue through which the challenges and achievements in current-day South Africa would be recognised.

Hers was always a voice that was uncompromising in the face of systematic abuse, recognised pristine where it shone and, despite needing to overcome almost insurmountable obstacles, inspired others to reach for the seemingly impossible.

The Foundation’s objective is, inter alia, to advocate for the implementation of fair labour relations and to champion issues of gender equality.

The Foundation will focus its Programme Areas on labour and gender issues as they pertain to the establishment of a just, non-racist and non-sexist South Africa. These themes are to direct the
Foundation’s objective and its mission.
